Mural to celebrate babies born in the neonatal unit
In 2015 the Families Group commissioned a stunning 13 metre long mural for the Neonatal Unit to celebrate the lives of the babies cared for there, past, present and future. The mural transforms the long, white corridor which parents pass every day on their way to visit their baby in the NICU. The mural was completed in February 2016 and the launch took place on Tuesday 26th April 2016.
The mural is the work of Hitchin-based illustrator, Sarah Bellisario, and her design company with Yoshie Allan 'Sas and Yosh'. Their design features a female figure letting go of a stream of flowers, in a setting of lush fantastical plants and flowers. The image above shows a section of the mural with the female figure. You can see the full design on the wall below.
Of the design, Sarah said, " The figure can be interpreted as a mother, or mother nature, or the unit itself, and the stream of flowers as the children who have been cared for in the neonatal unit."
Parents were invited to have their child or children's name(s) added to the mural design in return for a donation to the neonatal unit, and over 200 names are featured. The mural was open to the family of any child who was cared for by neonatal staff at the Lister Hospital and its former sister unit at the QEII in Welwyn, at any time in the past.
If you did not have a chance to register for this project, you can email us and we will keep your details on file for the future. We are thinking about other ways of celebrating children cared for at the unit, possibly in the garden we plan to create with the funds raised from the mural project. More details about this coming soon.
