After I went into spontaneous labour at 26 weeks, our twins Maddie and Emily were born weighing just 1lb 13oz and 2lb, They were whisked away in plastic bags and required immediate resuscitation and incubation. Our world collapsed and we thought they were lost forever.
I felt helpless seeing them for the first time in the incubator, linked to a ventilator with tubes everywhere and the endless beeping of machines. It was hard to believe they could survive. They were in neonatal for 11 turbulent weeks. It was certainly ‘day by day’, taking two steps forward and one back.
Gradually, they grew stronger, wires, tubes and machines disappeared until at last our babies lay in open cots doing everything by themselves. I couldn’t have been more proud of them both and was amazed at the strength and determination for life they showed from the moment they were born - they are true fighters and an inspiration. They came home at 37 weeks, weighing 5lb 4oz and 5lb 10oz
The care and devotion we witnessed from all the staff in that emotional time left us feeling truly humbled - It brings a tear to my eye thinking about it now. They are the reason we are now blessed with a bustling family, and for that I can never thank them enough.
Maddie and Emily are now four and will be starting reception in September. They are bursting with life and still amaze me everyday. I could only ever dream of this when they were in NICU and am amazed how far they have come. We are very blessed.
